As someone who has been a regular three times a week gym devotee for 13 years, I have spent in the region of $13,500 on membership. This is a lot of money especially when you consider although I am reasonably fit, healthy and can lift reasonable weights without doing myself any damage, I do not have anywhere near the type of body shape I had planned.

Now I also have to say that I do not enjoy going to the gym but after it being a regular habit for so long I do not want to give it up now, least of all because I do enjoy the feeling of being fairly fit and happy in my ability to lift decent weights.
